Meditation, Appreciation, and The Law of Attraction
By Joanie McMahon PsyD (ABD)
Meditation has gained popularity in North America over the past few years, with various styles all aiming to bring calmness to the body. But why is this important? Many people spend much of their time immersed in negative thoughts, worrying, or feeling overwhelmed, disappointed, angry, or afraid. They often believe they have no control over these thoughts, thinking their thoughts “think themselves.”
In reality, we do have control over our thoughts. Most of us are just “sloppy thinkers,” accustomed to letting our minds wander without realizing we have the power to focus and guide our thoughts. This becomes evident when we turn on the television and see the negative news that dominates the airwaves, giving the impression that the world is in a terrible state. However, the news often exaggerates the negative aspects, while, in truth, there are far more wonderful things happening. The well-being of our planet is abundant.
Meditation has become popular as a practice to restore calmness. Feeling calm and good is our natural state of well-being. At our core, we are calm and happy beings, but many of us are out of balance. Meditation helps us reconnect with our core.
It makes sense that meditation would emerge as a natural practice because it aligns with our inherent desire to move towards what feels good. Meditation feels better than the negative thoughts and emotions that often dominate our minds.
However, I propose (and my teacher, Abraham-Hicks, teaches) that an even higher state of well-being is appreciation. When we appreciate the things in our lives that we love, we reach the highest state of wellness. Appreciation ranks alongside happiness, love, and joy in terms of emotional well-being. In fact, appreciation is a higher state of well-being than meditation.
How does the Law of Attraction come into play? When we understand that our thoughts and emotions shape our reality every day, we can become deliberate creators. We have the power to create the reality we truly want.
Many find it hard to believe that we can be, do, or have anything we desire. But it’s true. For instance, if we want to be millionaires and consistently focus on how wonderful it will be, the Law of Attraction will respond by bringing us the people and experiences to attract that wealth. If we are unhealthy and desire health, our task is to focus on seeing ourselves as healthy and feeling great about it. The Law of Attraction will then guide us towards the health we seek. Health is our natural state.
If we want a beautiful new lover, we need to focus on how wonderful it will feel to have this person in our lives and the fun we will have together. The Law of Attraction will respond by bringing us the person we are seeking.
In my own experience, I used to spend a lot of time worrying or feeling overwhelmed, attracting situations that mirrored these emotions. When I learned about and understood the Law of Attraction, I became determined to be a deliberate creator. Knowing that I create my own reality, I wanted it to be wonderful.
It took time to raise my vibration or emotional level to attract the beautiful life I desired. Understanding that we have the power to create is incredibly empowering. We are all creators, and we have come forth to create.
I have an appreciation practice that I do each day, where I either write down all the things I appreciate or sit quietly and think about what I am appreciating on any given day. This practice keeps me emotionally tuned in to feeling great and brings me the happiness and well-being I seek.
Imagine a world of powerful, deliberate creators all having magnificent life experiences. That is the world I focus on each day.
